چکیده

We introduce and describe scientific workflows, i.e., executable descriptions of automatable scientific processes such as computational science simulations and data analyses. Scientific workflows are often expressed in terms of tasks and their (dataflow) dependencies. This chapter first provides an overview of the characteristic features of scientific workflows and outlines their life cycle. A detailed case study highlights workflow challenges and solutions in simulation management. We then provide a brief overview of how some concrete systems support the various phases of the workflow life cycle, i.e., design, resource management, execution, and provenance management. We conclude with a discussion on communitybased workflow sharing. *This is a preprint of [LAB09]

Workflow Composition: Semantic Representations for Flexible Automation

Many different kinds of users may need to compose scientific workflows for different purposes. This chapter focuses on the requirements and challenges of scientific workflow composition. They are motivated by our work with two particular application domains: physics-based seismic hazard analysis (Chapter 10) and data-intensive natural language processing [1]. Our research on workflow creation s...

Assessing Workflow Ability of ERP and WfM Systems

Automation of a business process can be obtained by using a workflow management system or ERP system embedding workflow functionalities. The wider diffusion of ERP systems tends to favor the latter solution. There are several practical limitations of most ERP systems when automating business processes. To date, there is a lack of empirical studies aiming at achieving an evidence of these limita...

“Conference Workflow” – a Formalization of a Conference Management Process

In this paper, one of the most popular and reliable Workflow Management Systems Oracle Workflow System is used for automation of a typical faculty business – organization of a scientific conference. Four main branches of the organization are detached into four sub-workflows and explained in details. Joined they create a structure and give a formal model able to support organization of a confere...

Scientific Workflows: Business as Usual?

Business workflow management and business process modeling are mature research areas, whose roots go far back to the early days of office automation systems. Scientific workflow management, on the other hand, is a much more recent phenomenon, triggered by (i) a shift towards data-intensive and computational methods in the natural sciences, and (ii) the resulting need for tools that can simplify...
